Manufactured : Continental Sime Tyre Alor Setar Sdn. Bhd.

Specification

The distinctive feature of the new ContiPremiumContactTM 2 is its unique 3D tread grooves, which optimise braking performance on both wet and dry roads and achieve optimum protection against aquaplaning.
Shallow side for better braking on dry roads, steep side for better braking on wet roads:
The shallow side of the 3D groove gives greater tread block stability and improved road contact, which results in shorter braking distances on dry roads. Even when placed under great strain the tread blocks do not bend away and so the tyre retains maximum contact with the road. This more even contact pressure ensures maximum transmission of power to the dry road.
The steep side of the 3D groove makes the edge of the tread block extremely angular. This enables it to cut through the water on the road, much like a windscreen wiper. The direct contact between the tyre and road means exceptionally short braking distances, even in the wet.

Special shape of the 3D grooves for better resistance to aquaplaning:
The special shape of the 3D grooves (shallow and steep sides) means that as the water flows through, a swirl effect is created. The water is thus dispersed more rapidly and the risk of aquaplaning reduced.
The harmonious round shape of the ground contact patch also increases resistance to aquaplaning.

Improved handling thanks to asymmetrical tread pattern:
The compact outer shoulder and the reduced number of tread blocks ensure optimum road contact and excellent cornering stability. The double block structure of the inner ribs ensures high circumferential tread stiffness, which results in  improved driving stability and braking performance. The open inner shoulder with its continuous lateral grooves and an increased number of tread blocks reduces rolling noise and disperses water efficiently, giving a comfortable ride and excellent protection against aquaplaning.

Unique tread design
ContiSportContactTM 2 has a strikingly clear tread design allowing no compromises. The asymmetrical pattern guarantees maximum ground adhesion in any driving situation. This is ensured by the closed outer shoulder section and the pronounced strips of tread rubber around the tyre's circumference. Another benefit of this tread design is that it delivers extremely precise steering response, both on bends taken at high speeds and when driving on the straight.

Ground pressure of the block tread during braking

Ground pressure of the strip tread during braking

The circumferential tread strips are much stiffer than individual tread blocks. So Conti's tyre engineers were able to use a softer tread compound. By combining the solid tread strips with the soft compound, tyre mileage performance could be enhanced to a high level.

Innovative silica tread compound
For some years now, silica has been one of the standard ingredients of tread compounds for high-performance tyres in the premium segment.

Our ContiSportContactTM 2 tyre features a newly developed bionic compound. This tread compound consists of two perfectly harmonised networks a flexible one and a firm one. The flexible network ensures maximum transmission of forces between the tyre and road surface, while the firm network provides the necessary stiffness for precise handling performance, above all at high speeds.

Bionic contour (AMC)
Thanks to its bionic contour (Advanced Mould Concept), the ContiSportContactTM 2 achieves more uniform ground-pressure distribution and hence greater adhesion than its predecessor.

At the same time, the contour provides the largest possible ground contact area when the car is braking. This ensures a much shorter braking distance on wet and dry roads, and means more safety for the car occupants.

NEW REGULATION FOR TYRE IN 2012 BY EU REQUIREMENT

INTRODUCTION

In Malaysia, the biggest tyre manufacturer well established nowadays such as Continental Sime Tyre in Petaling Jaya and Alor Setar, Good Year in Shah Alam and Silverstone in Taiping. Generally they are producing world brand tyre products for local market and some of the  production to be export to Europe and Middle East countries. When it came time to replace the tyre in tyre shop, it become a problem to buy a tyres from the various brand that offered. This task usually undertaken by the salesman to explain the advantages of each brand. However, toward 2012, every tyre that will be sell to Europe must stick a sticker that show the performance of the tyre. Hopefully this will be implemented in Malaysia too and it can improve market transparent for product difficult to differentiate their performance and price. Finally of cause the information’s on the tyre will let the consumer to judge the quality without any influence by the salesman anymore.

EU REGULATION

The action plan on Energy Efficiency (COM (2006)545), the European Commission announced that it would be consider proposing a labeling scheme for tyres in 2008. The air is to promote low resistance tyre (LRRT) as they allow for fuel savings amounting 3 to 4 %. A wider use of LRRT would hence contribute to the Community strategy on reducing road transport emissions. (Urs Reichart 2010).

By promoting LRRT in the replacement market, 75 % of the tyre market may be an effective way to contribute to the CO2 reduction target set in the Community strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars and light duty vehicles.

An impact assessment has been launched to assess policy options on how to promote market transformation towards LRRT, in particular through the introduction of tyre energy labeling taking into account safety considerations and other parameters such as noise and durability. The policy options will be assessed for C1 (passenger tyre), C2 (light truck vehicles tyre) and C3 (heavy truck and bus tyres) taking into account the regulatory package under consideration. (Fazilet Cinaralp 2010).

EMISSION CONTROL

By 2012, the target will be reached to 120 g/km CO2 emission from the engine vehicles. From 2020, the objective to reduce average emissions to just 95 g/km. (Fazilet Cinaralp 2010). Tyre mainly because of their rolling resistance, account for between 20 % and 30 % of a vehicle’s fuel consumption. A reduction in the rolling resistance of tires will make a considerable contribution to the energy efficiency of road transport, reducing CO2 emission by about 5 g for every kilometer driven. (Keith Read 2008).

However, because the tyre is the only point of contact with the road, it plays a key role in the vehicle’s braking performance. Maximizing a parameter like rolling resistance may have an adverse effect on other parameters such as wet grip, but maximizing wet grip may have an adverse effect on external rolling noise. The approach of the European legislators has therefore been dictated by advancing performance in a balanced and integrated manner.

Continental: Rising Costs for Raw Materials Make Price Increases for Passenger Tires Necessary

Hanover, December 6th, 2011. Due to the continuing rise in raw material and energy costs, Continental will increase the prices for summer passenger and light truck tires. Summer passenger tire list prices will be increased by three to four per cent for the Continental brand and by three to six per cent for the Uniroyal, Semperit and Barum brands. The new prices will go into effect on 1 January 2012. The increase of the prices will be effective in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

 TYRE LABEL

Two important tyre specific regulations were adopted in 2009. The first was Regulation (EC) 661/2009. It sets minimum requirement for: lowering minimum requirement for: lowering rolling resistance from 2012; lowering fuel consumption by reducing the resistance to motion that occurs when the tyre rolls, which is mainly caused by the deformation of the wheel, tyre or road. (Urs Reichart 2010).

The aims is to promote, through market forces, dynamic improvements to all of the parameters beyond the minimum requirement for type approval and by so doing improve the energy efficiency of road transport. Finally tyre labeling will drastically improve market transparence for products difficult to differentiate between tyres and have so far failed to pick up the best performing products on the market. The information available to consumers is given through a system of grading. The three key players in the supply chain are tyre manufacturer or importer, retailer, and the vehicle manufacturer will be obliged to keep customers informed.

Tyre suppliers will have to give this information as follow; for car, light truck and truck tyre, the information must be available in technical promotional literature (leaflets, brochures, etc) as well as on the manufacturer’s website, and for passenger vehicles and light trucks, the tyre manufacturers or importers must choose between putting a sticker on the tyre tread or labeling each batch of tyres before they are sent to the dealer and the end user.

At the point of sale, retailers must ensure that the tyre visible to consumers are carrying a sticker or labeled so that the end user is informed before completing the sale. The same information must be given during the purchase process in case the tyres are not visible to the end-user; the tyres are not visible to the end-user; and it must also be on or with the bill. (European Commission 2010).

Vehicle supplier and distributors must give the information to the consumer is offered a choice of tyres for vehicle they are intending to buy. When consumers have a choice of tyres, this information must be given in the promotion literature.
